Transforming Health Together

A transformative $10 million gift from Edward and Jennifer St. John and the Edward St. John Foundation launched the Edward & Jennifer St. John Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine (CTEM), a collaboration uniting the A. James Clark School of Engineering’s Fischell Department of Bioengineering (BIOE) at UMCP with the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) at UMB. Together, researchers from these distinct disciplines will tackle a broad spectrum of generational health challenges and drive medical innovations that benefit patients in Maryland and beyond.

About Us ESJ Foundation

History & Mission

The St. John’s Center for Translational Engineering and Medicine builds on a decades-long effort to strengthen collaboration between the University of Maryland, College Park, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Initiatives like the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower) program have laid the groundwork through seed grants, joint appointments, and shared research programs. Recognizing the need for close collaboration between engineers and biomedical researchers, the St. John’s Center was established in 2024 to accelerate research, education, and clinical innovation. The St. John Center is located on the fourth floor of the newly opened 4MLK Building, where faculty from both institutions work side by side. As part of this effort, the Fischell Department of Bioengineering (BIOE) has expanded into 4MLK, enhancing opportunities for joint research, education, and technology translation with the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) collaborating clinicians and engineers.

mpower

A $12.75 million grant from the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower) builds upon the $10 million joint gift from the St. Johns and the Edward St. John Foundation to establish CTEM, supporting shared research space at the 4MLK Laboratory and Office building in the University of Maryland BioPark, and enabling new joint faculty appointments, student experiences, and medical innovation.
